Where to put the QR code on the table and how to print it
A good digital menu loses its value if the QR code does not scan at once. A few details in placement and printing make the difference between a happy guest and one who asks for the paper menu.
Size and contrast
The code should be at least 3 × 3 cm to scan from a normal distance, and 4–5 cm is safer. Use a black code on a white or light background; codes with soft colours or a large logo in the middle scan more slowly.
Placement on the table
Put it where the guest’s eyes go naturally, on a stand in the centre or at the side of the table, not under glasses or plates. Do not place it next to a light source that causes glare, because a phone camera cannot read a code with a shine on it.
A material that lasts
Tables get wet, wiped and touched a lot. A wooden stand with an engraved code or an acrylic plate wipes clean quickly and does not wear out like paper. If you use paper, laminate it and replace it when it scratches.
Add one line of text
Under the code write a line such as “Scan for the menu” and the short web address. Some older guests, or those without a good camera, will type the address themselves.
Test it at every table
Before opening, scan the code from every table with at least two different phones. Test it in low light too, in the evening. If a table scans badly, change the position or the size.

- How big should the QR code be?
- At least 3 × 3 cm; 4–5 cm is safer for tables where the phone is held further away.
- Can I change the menu without reprinting the code?
- Yes, if the code points to an address that stays the same. You change the content of the menu, and the same code always shows the latest version.
- What if the code gets scratched?
- Replace it. A damaged code will not scan. That is why materials that wipe clean, like wood or acrylic, are better than paper.
