How to reduce reservation no-shows in a restaurant

A booked but empty table is lost profit, especially on a full evening. A few simple habits noticeably cut the number of guests who do not turn up.

Ask for confirmation on every booking

As soon as a guest books, send a confirmation with the date, time, number of people and a link to cancel. When cancelling is easy, many people do it instead of simply not coming.

Send a reminder

A message or email a day before, or a few hours before, cuts no-shows a lot. The reminder should include a quick way to change or cancel the booking.

Have a clear policy

State clearly how long you hold the table after the booked time, for example 15 minutes, and what happens with large groups. Guests respect a known rule from the start.

Use a waiting list

When a date fills up, keep a waiting list. If someone cancels, you call the first person on the list and the table does not stay empty.

Ask for more from large groups

Large groups or important dates, such as holidays, can call for an extra confirmation or a deposit. This is common and protects tables that would otherwise be lost.

A reservation system sends confirmations and helps with tables and the waiting list.
